US Open 2019 continues with a flurry of matches in the second day of the tournament. The men’s action presents us with a nice betting opportunity in the match Thanasi Kokkinakis v Ilya Ivashka.
Kokkinakis hasn’t had great luck in his career in terms of injuries thus far. Coming back from multiple setbacks, he managed to defeat the almighty Roger Federer in the first round of the Miami Masters last year.
This was perceived as a good sign for the Aussie. However, two months later he suffered a freak injury again which stopped his momentum. Fast forward an year and a half later, he hasn’t been able to fully recover and put consistent performances week in and week out.
His latest attempt for a comeback is not looking so bad thus far. One semi-final and two quarter-final appearances from four tournaments in the past six weeks is decent performance considering the circumstances.
Kokkinakis was given a wild card from the US Open organizers to try and put his season back on track.
His opponent, Ilya Ivashka, stormed through the qualifiers last week. In addition, he reached the second round as a qualifier in the recent ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Montreal.
Ivashka also had injury problems this year which made him miss three months of action (April-July). Despite that, his problems are far from the injury nightmare Kokkinakis has gone through.
Ivashka is a more consistent performer on the ATP Tour and has already had the chance to play three matches last week in the qualifying tournament. He also has a better overall record than Kokkinakis on hard courts career-wise. You can back Ivashka to win today’s match at odds of 2.00*.
